Native Plants
In addition to 'ohi'a, and 'ohelo, Brighamia insignis, called alula in Hawaiian, can be found on cliffs. It is often called "cabbage on a stick" because of its thick stem and tight cluster of leaves at the tip. Its sturdy stem allows the plant to rock in strong winds, and not be uprooted.
Metrosideros tremuloides, or 'Ohi'a ahihi, is also a cliff dweller and remains as a shrub in this environment. The species name tremuloides may refer trembling leaf movement in the wind. In Hawaiian ahihi is roughly translated as tangled, seemingly referring to the extended red petioles holding the many leaves.
