Rubus hawaiensis -- 'Akala




Rubus hawaiensis, or 'akala, is one of two endemic raspberries. It demonstrates some of the common native plant traits described in Figure 24-A. For example, the fruit shown here is considerably larger than raspberries one might find growing wild on the North American continent. Also, many 'akala are without prickles and lack sharp, hooked barbs. Photo by Glenn Bauer.



Rubus hawaiensis is found on all the main islands, except O'ahu, in mesic and wet forests and alpine shrublands. It is believed that the ancestral source is the Americas and that it arrived with birds which had eaten the seeds. Photo by G. Bauer.
