Hibiscus kokio -- kokio 'ula

Hibiscus kokio, subspecies saintjohnianus, is called kokio 'ula in Hawaiian. This native flower has five petals which clearly indicate it is a dicot. It is an endemic native plant, which means it is found in Hawai'i and nowhere else in the world.

The one above has a red flower color, but one from Kaua'i may have a distinctive orange flower. It can be found in dry and mesic forests on the Napali Coast and in Koke'e on Kaua'i.

It is not unusual to have this much of variation within a species, especially in native Hawaiian species. This subspecies was discovered by the botanist Harold St.John and bears his name. Photos by Priscilla Millen.
