 | Ipomoea batatas -- 'Uala, or Sweet potato
'Uala is a trailing vine with heart-shaped leaves in the Morning glory family. The white flowers with pink-purple spot at the throat open in the morning and soon close mid-morning.
'Uala was the second most important food crop for Hawaiians. It is the primary staple crop for Ni'ihau island which is dry and provides poor growing conditions for kalo. 'Uala could be grown on rocky slopes and dry areas, in mounds of powdery soils. The tubers produced could be used as food, fish bait, and food to fatten pigs, along with leaves.
