Cordia subcordata -- Kou
Kou is a small tree which grows well in sunny, dry areas. It quickly grows into a straight trunked, rounded headed tree. The wood is prized for its beautiful grain, which is light golden with dark markings. Items made from the wood are long lasting.
Leaves are glossy, medium green, and slightly pointed at the tip. They were used by the Hawaiians to a make brown dye. The attractive, bell-shaped, light orange flowers make attractive, scentless leis. Photos by Priscilla Millen.
