Tasks and Expectations



The tasks that you will be performing and the expectations of you as a Mathematics Student Assistant will be detailed on this page. During the course of your employment at the Mathematics Learning Resource Center, please feel free to discuss these problems with the Math Lab Manager or with members of the Mathematics Department.

1. Have an adequate mathematical background.
If you feel that your mathematical background is too weak or for some reason inadequate to assist students in mathematics, please talk with the Math Lab Manager or your mathematics instructor about the situation.

2. Be tactful when working with students.
Please be tactful when working with students. Once a student experiences an unpleasant situation, the chances of that student returning for additional assistance is very small.

3. Be dependable.
Each student assistant is an important part of the Mathematics Learning Resource Center operations. The smooth operation of the center depends on each employee. Any tardiness and/or unexcused absences will affect the day's operations. It will be your responsibility to inform the Math Lab Manager of your situation.

4. Be punctual.
Each employee is expected to be on time at the work station. Whenever you are not able to work or be at work on time, please call the Math Lab Manager to advise him of your situation. If no one is at the center, please leave a message. The telephone is equipped with a twenty-four hour message recorder.

5. Maintain a neat appearance.
Dress appropriately for work. Do not wear shorts or tank tops to work. This is a real work situation.

6. Take the initiative.
Take the initiative to perform other tasks.

7. Have a positive attitude.
Maintain a positive attitude. Take pride in your work. Be enthusiastic! Be considerate of each other and of students who come to the center.

8. Communicate positively.
Be courteous when working with others. Let communication be a two-way street. If problems arise, talk with the Math Lab Manager or a mathematics instructor. We are all here to assist students and the experience should be a very pleasant one for all involved.

9. Do not socialize in the center.
Do not ask friends to socialize with you during work hours. Socialization with friends during work hours is prohibited at the center.

10. Be courteous on the telephone.
When answering the center's telephone, please be courteous. Answer with "Math Lab, this is________. May I help you?" Proper telelphone etiquette is important.
