Placement Test
If you have any background or previous experience with the Japanese language, you should take the Placement Test to see which is the most appropriate level for you. Please e-mail the following information to Yumiko Asai-Lim (asailim [at] hawaii [dot] edu).

7. The approximate number of kanji characters you can read and write (NOTE: If you don't know hiragana or katakana, you should start with JPNS 101.)
8. Heritage student: How often and with whom do you speak Japanese at home?
Course Descriptions
JPNS 101 Elementary Japanese I (4)
A course designed to teach the fundamentals of the language and culture of Japanese. Emphasis is placed on the development of listening and speaking skills and reading and writing and writing skills using hiragana and katakana. Students mainly deal with simple sentence structures.
JPNS 102 Elementary Japanese II (4)
Continuation of Japanese 101. Continued emphasis is placed on listening and speaking skills, while an increased concentration is placed on reading and writing skills with introduction of kanji. Students are expected to use some complex sentence structures.
Prerequisite: JPNS 101 with a grade of C or better, or JPNS 101 equivalent by placement test or instructor’s approval.
JPNS 201 Intermediate Japanese I (4)
Continuation of Japanese 102. Continued emphasis is placed on listening and speaking skills, while an increased concentration is placed on reading and writing skills with an introduction of additional kanji. Students are expected to use some complex sentense structures and verb forms including but not limited to Potential and Volitional form.
Prerequisite: JPNS 102 with a grade of C or better.
JPNS 202 Intermediate Japanese II (4)
Continuation of Japanese 201. Continued emphasis is placed on listening and speaking skills, while an increased concentration is placed on reading and writing skills with introduction of additional kanji. Students are expected to use some complex sentence structures, passive and causative sentences, and honorific and humble expressions.
Prerequisite: JPNS 201 or equivalent.
