Pat Kamalani Hurley

Aloha mai! I am Professor Pat Kamalani Hurley, and I teach business writing (Eng 209) and business communications and linguistics (Ling 102) courses online.

I graduated from the Kamehameha Schools in 1973 and earned bachelors and masters degrees from the University of the Pacific. Upon returning to Hawai'i after college, I was hired to teach business writing at Leeward CC in 1982 and have been here ever since.

I'm lucky to always have fantastic students in all of my classes: interesting, hard-working, self-motivated. My goal is to build community inside and outside of my courses and in student-centered, student-directed learning.

I regularly present workshops for academic and business audiences on resume and interview preparation, effective business writing concepts, business language usage, Hawaii Creole (pidgin), and Native Hawaiian teaching and learning issues.

A Native Hawaiian, I am dedicated to encouraging native students to successfully pursue higher education. To that end, I founded Pūpū A 'O 'Ewa Native Hawaiian Writing and Arts and Ka 'Umeke Kā'eo Native Hawaiian Writing and Arts Achievement Awards and serve as director of Project Ku'ikahi Native Hawaiian Volunteer Database. I am a member of the Native Hawaiian Educators' Association and Leeward CC's Puko'a No Na 'Ewa Native Hawaiian Council.
