Leeward's ESL Program
|
The complete ESL ( English as a Second Language) program prepares non-native speakers of English for the speaking, reading and
writing tasks expected of a college student. The comprehensive and well-rounded preparation that students receive, brings not only language skills, but learning skills, social skills, self-awareness and cultural familiarity. The ESL program graduate is able to take his or her place in college classes alongside native speakers of English.
|
The ESL Program has been in effect since the beginning of Leeward College some thirty years' past.
The program is organized so that a non-native speaker of English may enter at a basic level and advance through the program to the transfer level at ESL 100.
College Intensive English Courses in ENGLISH AS A SECOND LANGUAGE are offered from the basic level up to the college transfer level.
The ESL Program is fully supported by assistance from :
- The ESL Faculty are professionals with many years of experience teaching ESL in Hawaii and around the world and all have Masters in English as a Second Language.
- The Learning Resource Center provides tutors who can assist with writing support. The LRC also provides free use of computers, instructional software and videos, language lab tapes and equipment, and extensive resources for grammar, reading, writing, listening and testing. Available in certain courses are informal conversation groups.
- The Library provides materials in the form of books, magazines, journals, videos, microfiche and so forth for research. The Leeward Library is connected to the index system for the University of Hawaii. The Library with its wide panorama of Pearl Harbor and large study area is a very comfortable place to study, do research, watch video lessons, make copies, do research on computers and use the Internet. The librarians are always helpful with any kind of research or study task.
- The International Festival occurs once a year at Leeward when international students are invited to display cultural artifacts and costumes. The Festival provides two days of lectures on various international themes, followed by a student lead festival demonstrating the food, dance, song, culture and costumes of various countries related to the theme.
- The International Student Organization is designed for International Visa students. Qualifying students are able to apply for scholarships in return for on- campus tasks and other requirements. See Associate Professor Michael Sagliano above for details. Students are invited to a luncheon with the Provost during the early part of each semester in order for details of the scholarship to be explained.
- All students have free use of computers, printers and email accounts at various locations around the campus.
