Favorite films of 2011

Writer: Andrew Outwater

To briefly explain, these are not what I consider the “best” films of the year. This is my list of films that I call my favorite. Though I do think several of these films are among the best of the year. That said, here are my 10 favorite films of 2011.

Music, burlesque, comedy

“Oedipus Rex” is a tragic Greek myth.

“Oedipus Sex” is a Leeward Community College Theatre fundraiser.

Semester of Shakespeare

The Semester of Shakespeare was presented by literature students at Leeward Community College. The semester-long, award-winning project featured lectures, workshops, films and a performance of Shakespeareʻs “A Midsummer Nightʻs Dream,” held on April 23 to coincide with his birthday.

Professor Paul Cravath is taking a bow at Leeward Community College after 34 years of guiding and helping students in the theatre arts.

The man, who was such an inspiration for so many students, never took a theater course until he entered a master’s program at Tulane University in New Orleans. He had been in a few plays and “I always played old men,” he said, ruefully.

When asked to describe him in one word, his students expressed their appreciation for Cravath.

Celebrity

At the theater and drama department at Leeward CC, it's all monkey business. Except, that is, when it comes to work. In conjunction with professional dance theatre company, Monkey Waterfall, students had the unique opportunity to take part in a rich performing arts experience, culminating with the on-stage performance of "Celebrity."
