Intramural sports start this semester

Leeward Community College students will be able to participate in intramural sports this fall. Students will be able to form their own teams with other students and challenge other student teams.

A volleyball league will be held on campus in the fall semester and it’s also open to Leeward faculty as well as students from the University of Hawai‘i-West O‘ahu.

To some, the term “community” may be as simple as “people.” To Webster’s Dictionary, it means “a social group of any size whose members reside in a specific locality often having a common culture.”

For Laurie Lawrence, Coordinator of the Leeward Community College-Wai‘anae campus, a community is “a group of people with the same basic vision who work together for that vision to become reality.”

Subway brings options

From the famous Chicken Bacon Ranch to the Classic B.M.T to the new Pulled Pork BBQ and bacon & egg flatbread, the new Subway eatery has increased the food options on campus.

Located in the Uluwehi Cafe, the new Subway gives the campus more food choices and closes later than the cafeteria. Fall hours are 7:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. daily and Subway accepts debit and credit cards. The rest of the cafe, which carries plate lunches, drinks and burgers, closes at 2:30 p.m. Mondays through Thursdays and 1:30 p.m. on Fridays.

'Transformers 3' great in 3-D, story still 1-D

By Andrew Outwater

To start this review off, I enjoyed the first “Transformers.” It was a stupid, but fun introduction to what could have been a great franchise or a solid stand-alone film.

Then “Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen” came out and just sucked every bit of life out of me for close to three hours. As I explain here, I absolutely loathed the second movie. It later was said that the second film was during the writers’ strike, and they didn’t have much of a script to go off of. Michael Bay is not a storyteller (much less a creative thinker in terms of story), so having him come up with stuff on set off the top of his head would explain why it sucked so much.

Bobbie Martel, an instructor and coordinator of the Associates of Arts in Teaching program, was one of 15 recipients of the University of Hawaii Regents’ Medal for Excellence in Teaching.

This does not come as a surprise to any of her fellow professors or students at Leeward Community College. She engages and encourages every student in her classroom and in doing so, brings out the best in all of him or her. Even her colleagues are spurred on to greater heights.
