Friday January 24, 2003. A quick survey was done in Biol 101 (MWF) class wherein I asked students to write their comments on two issues:

a) Are the goals and objectives of the course clear to you?

b) What is your preferred lecture format? (PowerPoint presentation, traditional blackboard and a combination of both

Results of the survey are as follows:

1. Everyone understood the goals and expectations for the course. One student's response was " The goal is to pass with an A and a better understanding of chemical, geological and life systems". I encourage you to LEARN about biology and the grade will naturally follow.

2. Power point, blackboard or combo?

a) I like the traditional black board approach 7 students

b) I like the power point presentation 3 students

c) I like a combination of both lecture and power point 12 students

Majority of the class wants a balanced approach and that is an excellent choice for me too!

About PowerPoint Presentation: Many PowerPoint files have been adapted from media supplement of the Textbook Publisher, Benjamin Cummings (Pearson Education, Inc.). I strongly recommend students to visit the Publisher’s website at www.essentialbiology.com (Bio 101) or www.campbellbiology.com (Bio 171) and benefit form their online resources.
