ANNOUNCEMENTS FROM LEEWARD CC – ITG

Windows XP Users – Service Pack 2

Windows XP users – On April 12, 2005, the Windows XP Service Pack 2 temporary blocker will expire and the Windows Updater will install Windows XP Service Pack 2 after April 12th. Windows XP Service Pack 2 does have many important security features that will help protect your computer from security threats that are on the network today. Since Windows XP Service Pack 2 is a large file (200MB in size), it will take a long time to download and to install on your computer. For your convenience, we have the Windows XP Service Pack 2 CDs available for loan at the Leeward CC Help Desk if you would like to install it on your own. Please visit the Leeward CC Help Desk in BS-109 to borrow the CD. If you want the Help Desk to install the Windows XP Service Pack 2 for you, please call x271 to schedule an appointment. The installation will take about an hour to complete and it will require a restart of the computer. We encourage you to install the Windows XP Service Pack 2 before April 12th to protect your computer now and to save time so you will not be bothered in April right before finals.

New Version of McAfee VirusScan Enterprise v8.0i

McAfee VirusScan Enterprise v8.0i – There is a new version of McAfee VirusScan Enterprise available for Windows 2000, Windows XP or Windows server 2003 computers and it is called McAfee VirusScan Enterprise v8.0i. Please upgrade to the McAfee VirusScan Enterprise v8.0i version as soon as possible. If you want to install McAfee VirusScan Enterprise v8.0i on your own, the software can be downloaded from the https://secure.its.hawaii.edu/antivirus/license.asp (we will also have some CDs available for loan at the Leeward CC Help Desk) and the instructions on how to install it are here http://www.hawaii.edu/itsdocs/win/vse80i.pdf. If you want the Leeward CC Help Desk to install the McAfee VirusScan Enterprise v8.0i for you, please call x271 to schedule an appointment. The installation of McAfee VirusScan Enterprise v8.0i should take about 15 minutes.

Please note that if you are still using Window 98, you will need to upgrade to the McAfee VirusScan Home Edition v9.0 because it is the only McAfee product that will run on Windows 98. DO NOT install the Enterprise v8.0i version on your Windows 98 computer. The McAfee VirusScan Home Edition v9.0 software may be downloaded from https://secure.its.hawaii.edu/antivirus/license.asp and the instructions on how to install it are here http://www.hawaii.edu/itsdocs/win/vshe90.pdf .

If you plan to install these 2 items on your own, please do the Windows XP Service Pack 2 first and restart your computer. When you get back to the Windows Desktop, run the Windows Updater (for instructions see below) and restart if necessary. After restarting the computer, you may install the McAfee VirusScan Enterprise v8.0i and tell it to update before you restart. McAfee VirusScan does require a restart to complete the installation.

The total estimated time is 1 hour and 30 minutes to do all of these upgrades whether you do it on your own or if you have an appointment.

How to run Windows Update on Windows XP after Service Pack 2 is installed

  1. Double left click on Internet Explorer. (Note: You cannot use Netscape or Firefox for this.)
  2. In the Address box, type in windowsupdate.microsoft.com and hit enter
  3. If this is the first time using Windows Update, it will install a small program that is necessary for the Windows Update tool to work with your computer. It will ask you if you want to install it, please left click on OK. If you do not click on OK, the process cannot continue. You will have to close Internet Explorer and start from step 1.
  4. The resultant window will have 2 panes (left and right). You will see 2 links in the right pane. The first option is Express Installation and the second is Custom Installation. You may single left click on the Express Installation.
  5. Your computer will be scanned for missing patches at this point. It may take a few minutes.
  6. When the scan is completed, the results will display in the left pane. The high priority updates will be displayed in the right pane. If there were no missing patches, the left pane will display a message that no patches are available. You may close Internet Explorer if this message is displayed because your computer is up-to-date already.
  7. Single left click on the Install button to start the installation process.
  8. A pop-up window will display the progress.
  9. When it is completed, Windows will want to restart. You will need to restart the computer to apply the patches to the computer.
