Module 5 Discussion

Lawyers and business people (and sales people in particular) are often seen by the public as being unethical cold-hearted sharks. The popular view is that these people are concerned only with winning and with making money.

While that may certainly be an accurate description for some individuals, it is not really how it has to be with YOU. 


 

Think about what you believe is important for a fulfilled professional and personal life.

1. Prepare for this discussion by downloading and reading this short article, A Life Worth Living (.pdf), by author and entrepreneur Tim Conner from the Eye of Sales website.

2.  Your discussion post will be based on one or more of the following. 

  1. What do you think about Conner's list of 12 principles? 

  2. Of all of the 12 principles, which one or two or three do you feel is/are most important? Why?

  3. Which principle(s) do you try to follow? What do you do to live these principles? That is, what actions do you try to do regularly that are based on these principles?

  4. Which principle(s) do you feel you need to work on? 

  5. Are any of the principles not practical or possible, in your view? Why?

  6. How will these principles make you a better business person? 

  7. Are there any principles that you believe in that aren't on this list?

3. Your posting is about your ideas and insights on your experiences. Do not simply give a numbered list of questions and answers. Instead, use the questions as a jumping off point to help you form your discussion posting. Share your ideas and add any personal experiences. As long as your answers are thoughtful, they will be acceptable. Ms. Hurley as no preconceived ideas of what a good or bad, right or wrong answer is.

4. Consider your answer and then compose your thoughts in your word processing software. Be sure to spell check.

See the Rubric for Discussion and Feedback Response Postings (.pdf) to guide you. It's not enough to answer in one or two sentences. Your posting must be two paragraphs minimum. They should be planned out, fully developed and logically organized. 

Compose a short title for the subject line of your posting (examples: Doing what I love or Trying to live without regret) WebCT automatically identifies you, so you don't need to write your name on the subject line.

5. Post your answer by the deadline in the calendar. Do NOT post as an attachment, which requires extra steps for your readers. Instead, copy your paragraphs and then paste them onto the message box. 

Remember! Cut and paste your answer onto the message box. Do NOT post your answer as an attachment.

6. Do NOT post duplicates or revisions. Instead, post your best discussion just once, the first time. Click Update Listing to view your posting (to avoid posting more than once.)

7. During the feedback session, respond to at least one classmates' postings. Remember that it's not enough to say "I agree" or "Good job."  Please do not give feedback until the feedback start date to give everyone a chance to post their opinions. So that everyone gets feedback, be sure to respond to a posting that has no or little feedback.
