Volunteer Information

Please contact the University of Hawaii Service Learning Program through the telephone number or through the email listed above.  Volunteers will be able to become involved in a variety of UH service learning projects and programs.  The Program also has access to a large directory of other community service organizations that are Native-Hawaiian specific and non Native-Hawaiian specific.

Additional Information

Throughout the country university students are responding to community needs. While responding, they are actively applying classroom theory to the challenges they face. In an effort to create a central office, which would locate these community needs, inform students of the needs, and link courses with experiential learning, the Service Learning Program was established. Other colleges and universities in Hawai'i saw the potential for such a program in July 1994 and, with UHM President Kenneth Mortimer, joined Campus Compact, a national service learning organization. Since joining, Hawai'i has formed its own state Compact, with UHM Service Learning Program serving as the state office. As of June 1995, all Hawai'i institutions of higher education have become members of Hawai'i Campus Compact and have joined to increase the link between their respective colleges and universities and their local communities. This process continues through semesterly state-wide newsletters and grant opportunities.
