Organization Purposes

Pu'u O Manoa Native Plant Nursery (The Rocky Hill Nursery) is a community effort to raise awareness about Native Hawaiian plants.  Being conscious of Hawai'i’s unite and fragile ecosystem is important because deforestation and introduction of alien plants and animals have adverse effects on indigenous plants.  The nursery is an educational center for students as well as a source of plants for the community.

At Pu'u O Manoa, volunteers from Punahou and the community help raise plants from seedlings to maturity and prepare them for outplanting, under the guidance of Gail Pieterson and David White.  Seedlings are raised in a greenhouse that has an automated sprinkler system, then transplanted into larger pots and moved to areas protected by shade cloth or outside growing areas.  When ready for outplanting, they are moved to locations in need of restoration or to other gardens that increase awareness of Native Hawaiian plants.

Pu'u O Manoa is run by volunteers and relies on donations and in-kind grants from the community.  Since 1998. Pu'u O Manoa has donated over 5000 Native Hawaiian plants to the community.
