NHLC’s
mission statement is “to assert, protect, and defend
Native Hawaiian rights to land, natural resources, and
related entitlements.”
NHLC’s program priorities include:
·
Kuleana
Rights
·
Traditional
and customary practices, including rights of access,
gathering, the right to engage in traditional
subsistence, and cultural and religious practices
·
Sovereignty
and self-Determination
NHLC
serves the State of
Hawai'i
– Hawai'i Island,
Maui
, O’ahu, Moloka’i, Lana’i, Kaua’i, and
Kaho’olawe. Since
1974, NHLC has provided families and individuals with
affordable and effective legal representation in the
unique area of Native Hawaiian rights.
Thousands of people who might not otherwise have
been able to obtain legal advocacy have held on to
valuable lands or received fair compensation for their
lands. Others
have been assisted in their efforts to obtain Hawaiian
Homestead leases, water for taro farming, or access to
shoreline areas for fishing.
NHLC is the only
non-profit, public interest law firm specializing in
Hawaiian land and traditional rights.
