Volunteer Information

Volunteers are welcome to get additional information by contacting the number listed above.  Individuals of Native Hawaiian and non-Native Hawaiian descent are welcome to apply.  Participants must have an interest in cancer prevention and control.  Additionally, individuals working with ‘Imi Hale must also have an interest in community based participatory research.

‘Imi Hale is a program of Papa Ola Lokahi and is supported by a grant from the National Center Institute’s Center to Reduce Cancer Health Disparities.  ‘Imi Hale’s objective include:

  • Increase cancer awareness among Native Hawaiians

  • Educate the Native Hawaiian community about clinical trials

  • Increase the number of Native Hawaiian researchers

  • Increase the number of research grants addressing cancer in Native Hawaiians

  • Establish research protocols that are respectful of Native Hawaiian cultural belief and customs

The ‘Imi Hale project seeks to launch culturally appropriate research activities aimed at all aspects of Native Hawaiian cancer issues.

‘Imi Hale’s logo is Halehuki (circa 1940) in Hilo, Hawai'i, which was the family home of Hawaiian composer Helen Desha Beamer.  It was a gathering place for family, friendship, and music.
