Volunteer Activities

IN THE GARDEN:  Join a series of Hawaiian gardening days and workshops with experts in the field.  Discover the Hawaiian coastal strand flora.  Learn the best techniques for pruning, mulching, transplanting, and much more.  Pot and propagate plants for your own backyard.

Dates: 8/14/04, 9/11/04, 10/9/04, 11/3/04, 12/11/04

UP THE STREAM:  Help recreate a natural habitat in an attempt to bring back our native fish.  Learn about stream restoration.  Remove alien species from our stream and prevent coastal erosion.  Pick up marine debris.  Plant and mulch native stream flora on the shore line.

Additional Information

Individuals, groups and families are always welcome.  No age restrictions!

The Friends of He'eia is a non-profit organization whose mission is to foster a sense of stewardship towards the natural and cultural resources of the land and sea.  The Friends of He'eia also:

·       Offer environmental education programs that include marine science, ethno-botany, earth science, and Hawaiian culture.

·       Offer lectures and organized activities dealing with current community concerns.

·       Provide guided tours of He'eia State Park focusing on the cultural significance and scenic landmarks that can be seen from the park. We explain traditional uses of Hawaiian flora.

·       Litter clean ups quarterly.

·       Monitor water, soil, and wildlife of the He'eia Ahupua'a through a partnership with higher education.

·       Sponsor community educational organizations, service clubs, and cultural groups.

·       Provide internships for college students in natural science, culture, education, and recreation management.
