Volunteer Information

Individuals with a vested interest in working with children are encouraged to get more information.  All ages welcomed.  Participants must demonstrate good morals and good character.  Individuals must exemplify Native Hawaiian virtues and values.  Volunteers must have a vested interest in working with children.

What does Hui Malama o ke Kai do?

Hui Malama o ke Kai’s mission statement is “to develop community pride and foster leadership among Waimanalo’s youth through teaching of Native Hawaiian culture and values.  As a program developed by the community and created and sustained through family, school, and community partnerships, it serves the ‘opio of Waimanalo now and into the future.

Hui Malama o ke Kai is a youth development program that offers academic support, life skills development, ocean recreation, and family bonding while emphasizing Native Hawaiian values and culture.  The program teaches violence prevention and curriculum and promotes physical, emotional, and spiritual health.

Hui Malama o ke Kai is a community-based program started by community members of Waimanalo in 1998.  Community members identified the need for teaching ocean safety to Waimanalo children, as well as passing on Native Hawaiian culture and values to the next generation.
