The Basilica of the Holy Blood is a combo Romanesque and Gothic Basilica. The lower level is an ancient Romanesque Chapel as seen in my image. Upstairs they tacked on a larger Gothic Chapel. The exterior is also decorated in Gothic style. This basilica is best known as the repository of a vial reputed to contain the blood of Jesus, and brought to Brugges by Crusaders in the 12th or 13th Century.
The plain Jane Romanesque decor of this chapel is more conducive to meditation and prayer than ornate Baroque and Renaissance churches. And the hardwood pews are designed to be uncomfortable so you won't doze off. Unfortunately electric lights spoil the mystical ambience. Candle and oil lamps flicker and impart a gentle warmth unmatched by modern lights.
