A gondola creeping down a narrow canal laden with a family on holiday. Every camera gripping heehaw treading the boardwalks of Venice takes this shot. I admit, I'm guilty too. Heehaw! But how could I resist? With that said, this is probably one of the best images of my Spring 2008 tour. I was extremely lucky this subject appeared at the right place and time.
Usually this canal is lost in shadow as the water is protected by the surrounding villas. But this was midday and cloudy bright sunlight from above was upon the gondola and its passengers. Not Rembrandt light, but nearly as focused and selective--sorta a diffused spotlight. I couldn't have lit them better had I tangled an assistant above with floodlights.
The narrowing and curving waterway help impart depth and draw your eyes forward to the gondola. Sparkling highlights around the gondola encourage your eyes to linger near the main subject, providing accent and significance. Both the waterway and walls serve as a frame for the gondola. Finally, I find it odd both passengers and gondolier have such relaxed, almost sedate, expressions on their faces.
