Downtown Honolulu Galleria

Peter Kun Frary, Professor of Music • University of Hawaii • Leeward CC

Concrete Oasis

The downtown Honolulu area consists of Chinatown, the business district and the state capital, all within a few blocks of one another. This juxtaposition results in ironic and strange combinations of people, lifestyles and architecture: Buddhist temples and Christian churches; Aloha shirt uniformed businessmen and Jehovah's Witness, FOB immigrants and transvestites; sleek skyscrapers and sweatshops; and luxuriant restaurants and soup kitchens. Take a five minute stroll downtown and you're likely to hear five or six different languages! Downtown has it all: power, wealth, despair, poverty. hope, beauty, sleaze, sin and redemption.
