Mokuleia Galleria

Peter Kun Frary, Professor of Music • University of Hawaii, Leeward

Mokuleia Beach lies on the North Shore of Oahu, a short jog from an old Army air base, Dillingham Airfield. Beach access is via an ancient driveway that cuts through a seaside dude ranch. The ranchers built fences along the driveway and beach, thereby placing a zit on my little chunk 'o paradise. Mokuleia Beach is a haven for alternative lifestyles, so don't be surprised if some of its frequenters forgo bathing suits!

Despite fences and nudists, Mokuleia is a paradise for both photographers and sweethearts. In the morning the view along the beach is stunning: a sweeping vista of coral sand and clear turquoise water peppered with colorful kite surfers and hang gliders. Recently it has served as the main location set of the TV series "Lost," revealing my secret paradise before millions.

In visual imaginary, paths often symbolize a destination once traveled or hoped to be traveled. This path leads to Mokuleia Beach, my place of dreams and paradise lost.

This gallery is dedicated to Pallas Athena, deity of wisdom, fertility, useful arts and prudent warfare.
