Tutors Needed at Pearl City High School

AVID stands for Advancement Via Individual Determination.  Selected 9th and 10th graders at Pearl City High School are taking an AVID elective course in which they will receive tutoring to help them perform well in rigorous courses.  These students are motivated to want to attend four-year colleges, but just need a bit of support.  Tutors will be trained and will take an active part in developing the academic and personal strengths of the students. Tasks include: Leading collaborative tutorial groups, assist students in the writing process, evaluating their binders, help motivate them to stay on task, etc.

Volunteers Needed!

Company: Career Challenge
(They work in Partnership with Youth Challenge Academy and Building Industry Association to provide life skills and apprenticeship readiness training to graduates of the Youth Challenge Academy. * Please note that these students are young adults, ages 18-20yrs & therefore would NOT fulfill UH Manoa’s College of Ed field experience admission requirements for Elem. Ed/Secondary Ed.)

Subject Area: Mathematics (Specifically, applying the math to real-world situations. The math is generally on an eighth-grade level; fractions, decimals, measurements, some basic algebra, and applying these skills to specific tasks.)

Program Format: The program runs for six consecutive weeks and the participants will have study time scheduled in the evenings, generally between 6pm and 9pm. The tutoring would most likely be needed starting in the third week of instruction.

Location: Building 46 of the Youth Challenge Academy compound

Electronics Technician / Classroom Aide

  Full Time teacher’s aide position will assist in classroom & workshop sessions for the Tech Together Program. Responsibilities will include setting up & maintaining the electronic equipment, tools and provide hands-on experience for all participants.  Preferred experience should include work in a Hawaiian program; familiarity with education and societal challenges of Hawaiians; working in a Hawaiian community. I Can Read! Recess Reading Program

What: I Can Read is a program designed to help students in grades K-3 become proficient in reading through the one on one support of a reading buddy.

Where: Waialua Elementary; 67-020 Waialua Beach Road

When: During K-3rd grade recesses 9-10am, M-F. Volunteers are asked to spend one hour a day, three days a week.

Who: Caring individuals who want to help students achieve success in reading.
