Services and Requirements

Ho'oulu is the Native Hawaiian Career and Technical Education Program at Leeward Community College and is located at Halau 'Ike o Pu'uloa in the DA Building.

Our goal is to increase the recruitment, retention, and completion of Native Hawaiian students in career and technical education programs by providing support services and academic advising.

The coordinator of Ho'oulu, Kae'o Bradford, works closely with the LCC Job Prep Services, the Service-Learning Coordinator, Cooperative Education Coordinators and community representatives to provide opportunities for Ho'oulu participants to gain experience working in their fields of study.

Students who are getting credit for their work experience (Cooperative Education, Service-Learning, Internships, etc.) are eligible to receive stipends for volunteer services in the community setting.

Environmental Science
Students experience a "hands-on" approach by enrolling in SCI 197: Introduction to Environmental Science.  This course provides an overview of major topics including basic science principles, geology, oceanography, beaches and coastal regions, coral reefs, water resources, meteorology, climatology, pollution, and Hawaiian perspectives of the environment.  Students learn technical skills for environmental analysis and hone their skills through actual sample collection and testing.

Support Services
Ho'oulu provides financial support for cooperative education and internships, peer counseling, assistance in career and vocational planning, and opportunities to gain work experience.

Ho'oulu students also have access to the laptop computers conveniently located at Halau 'Ike o Pu'uloa.  With the laptop computers, students can complete their homework assignments, check their e-mail, search the Internet, or brush up on their computer skills.

Tutoring and mentoring services are also available.
