If you travel to Kauai, be sure to drive to Hanalei, a quaint village with a strange intermingling of old Hawaii and New Age crystal strokers. After lunch and a stroll in Hanalei, follow the road--the only road--another 30 minutes or until you come to Haena State Park. Haena is the end of the road and the trailhead to panoramic vistas of the Na Pali Coast. To photograph these spectacular ocean cliffs you must endure a difficult one week hike through rain forest, lush valleys and mountains. The mosquitoes are as big as birds and it rains all the time. However, there are thousands of chickens everywhere, so you won't starve if you get lost in the jungle.

I didn't get very far on the hike (my wife didn't want to ruin her Louis Vuitton shoes), so had to make do with the tourist areas. I found this small stream flowing across the road at Haena State Park. I planted my tripod on the flooded pavement and dodged the splashes of passing cars and nailed this shot.
