This is one of my all time favorite images and the last picture I shot on the slopes of Diamond Head that evening. While waiting for "sweet light" I felt I was being watched. This in itself was nothing new. After weeks of shooting around Diamond Head I knew there was a dark side to this beautiful and isolated place. Men were stalking and watching me constantly. There is a large population of homeless people living on the slopes. They walk down to Waikiki at dawn and return at dusk. However, they're reclusive and wish to be left alone. Ironically, the homeless wake up to million dollar ocean views everyday! The stalkers were outsiders or what Diamond Head surfers call "trail boys."
After only a few minutes of shooting a naked man with a hard-on emerged and lunged at me. I immediately grabbed my spike tipped Bogan tripod and swung at him with all my might. He ducked and bolted for the bushes. Damn he was fast.
The slopes on the ocean face of Diamond Head are not a place to walk alone or take friends or family. Within those few weeks of shooting I was stalked, attacked and had stones thrown at me. I've never returned to this beautiful but evil place. Ironically, Diamond Head, one of the most famous landmarks in all the earth, is infested with pervs, homeless and the mentally ill.
