I arrived in Victoria on BC Day and noticed a massive party was about to ensue in the harbor. Soldiers and bands were marching in the streets and thousands of people lined the harbor in anticipation of the Victoria Symphony Concert. The symphony was seated on the barge just to the left of the Canadian flag mast. They performed the 1812 Overture and the Royal Navy shot real canons in the finale! The canons seemed out of rhythm, but they were so loud you couldn't hear the symphony anyway. I assume they were using blanks.
Victoria is the cleanest city I have ever seen or smelled. Not a speck of liter anywhere. Early in the morning I saw shopkeepers hosing down the sidewalks in front of their stores. I think Americans could learn a few things from Canadians about civic pride and responsibility.
