I often wander the waterfront near Honolulu's Aloha Tower. The sound, sight and scent of the ocean makes for relaxing walks and ample photographs. My Koolau Moon image is a lucky juxtaposition of moon, cloud, tree and twilight during a walk. It lasted but seconds but is frozen forever in this photograph. To capture all three elements in the frame, I had to lie down on the ground.

I've returned many times since that day but never again to a similar scene. Sadly the city parks department cut down the tree and only a stump remains. But such is life: the fleeting and evanescent are also the most memorable and beautiful. I wish I could photograph the best parts of my life and keep them perfect forever. But life ain't PhotoShop.

During a foolish moment not too long ago I penned a poem I also call Koolau Moon. I'm not a poet but I figured ephemeral moments need verbal expression. It's corny but what the hay.

Koolau Moon

Peter Kun Frary

Tonight a Koolau Moon drifts low over Punchbowl.

Translucent clouds stream from the mountains,

hiding and revealing her perfect face.

Under her countenance only matters of the heart are truth.

In her pale light we join hands and walk towards the sea.

We dance on a moonlit seashore at Waimea.

We hold one another against sparkling waves.

The rhythm of your heartbeat hypnotizes me.

Your touch thrills me.

Laughing, we surrender and crossover to her domain.

Imagine you and I under a Koolau Moon.

Adieu T!
