Madonna and Christ Child at the Cathedral of our Lady of Peace in downtown Honolulu. The statue of Our Lady of Peace in the Cathedral courtyard was dedicated on December 24, 1893. It marks the spot where the first wooden missionary church stood (1827). It is a reproduction of a statue at the Convent of the Sacred Hearts Sisters in Paris.

The Cathedral was built during Hawaii's missionary era and served as the main church of the Vicariate Apostolic of the Hawaiian Islands. It was dedicated on August 15, 1843 under the title of Our Lady of Peace or Malia O Ka Malu. It's the oldest cathedral in continuous use in the United States. Of course there are older Cathedrals but apparently not used continuously!

I took this image late in the evening. Although the floodlights are harsh and uneven, I prefer the dramatic lighting and deep shadows over the usual daytime presentation.
