View of Punchbowl and Nuuanu Valley just after midnight on New Year's Day 2009. I live in a skyscraper in a concrete jungle and this is the view out my front window.
Although the use of fireworks in Hawaii has declined considerably this past decade, New Year's Eve is still filled with the sizzle, pop and bang of firecrackers and fireworks. The local government has been busy taxing and restricting firecracker and firework use and these actions have taken a toll. And, yes, that is an illegal firework in the backgound.
The mist and clouds are gunpowder residue from intense firecracker popping in the valley. I can remember when the gunpowder smoke was so thick it looked like a blackout.
