The Basilica di Santa Maria del Fiore is the main cathedral or duomo of Florence. It is renown for its massive dome designed by Filippo Brunelleschi and the elaborate green, pink and white marble panels. The main church was designed by Arnolfo di Cambio in 1296 but there have been many additions and minor redesigns over the centuries. However the intricate façade depicted in my picture was part of Cambio's original design.
Across the square from the Basilica lies the Battistero di San Giovanni (Baptistery of St John). The Battistero is home to the famous "Gates of Paradise" doors.
I was only packing a 17mm lens and was unable to capture the entire Basilica all at once. However the massive bell tower had some ugly scaffolding so it is just as well.
