View of the Belfry Tower from the Grote Markt (Great Market Square) with the arses of medieval patriotic heroes Jan Breydel and Pieter de Coninck in foreground.
The Belfry of Bruges is a Gothic bell tower (1240) in the center of Bruges, Belgium. From 1604, Brugges employed a carillonneur to play the bells during Sundays, holidays and market days. The bells are operated with a piano-like keyboard but played with fists rather than fingers.
Incidentally, this beautiful late afternoon light heralded the one and only appearance of perfectly blue sky during the days I spent in Brugges.
