Once inside the Church of San Maria Maggiore, this is the stunning view that befalls you (dome above alter). It was the first Roman church I visited so I was floored. San Maria Maggiore is best known for Michelangelo's sculpture of Moses, but is literally brimming with other great works of art. And being the size of a football field meant no shortage of room.
This was one of the few churches that allowed photography, albeit without flash. So bring a fast lens and crank the ISO. And study your camera manual so you know how to turn off the frickin' flash. I noticed most people hadn't a clue how to disable autoflash and, because of this, too many places don't allow photography (light fades paint). I actually helped several tourists (Canon Rebel owners) disable their popup flash (get outta full auto mode!).
