Sand Island Cranes Honolulu Harbor, Hawaii, USA
Photo by Peter Kun Frary Canon EOS 10D and EF 70-200 4L USM
I took this shot from the second floor observation deck at Aloha Tower Market Place. These cranes are used to load and unload ships that dock on the Sand Island side of Honolulu Harbor. It was difficult to see through the viewfinder due to the sun's extreme brightness. The sun exceeded the camera's dynamic range and recorded as a burned out blob. Reducing exposure restored the disk of the sun but destroyed shadow detail. By tucking the sun behind the crane and mountain (Makakilo), I reduced contrast enough to get a useable image. Amazingly, the EF 70-200 4L USM exhibits less flare and ghosting with the smaller sensor format of digital cameras than full frame 35mm cameras.
