Why
Study History and Literature? Some students
think they can become great musicians by merely practicing
everyday. A daily practice routine is extremely important,
but there is more to music than grinding your ax. A
knowledge of music history and literature gives your
repertoire a historical and stylistic context. Why is
knowledge of this context important? Technique and
interpretation differ from each culture, historical era,
composer and musical genre. For example, Bach's phrasing,
balance and ornamentation differ considerably from that of
Tárrega. Knowledge of the unique characteristics of a
style has a major impact on the success of your practice
and, ultimately, your performance. Here are
Professor Peter's writings on guitar history and
literature.
