Mus 103 • Guitar Ensemble I

Performance of literature for guitar ensembles: duets, trios, quartets and larger groups. Course will culminate with a public performance of major works. This course may be repeated for additional credits. Recommended Preparation: Mus 121C. (45 lecture/lab hours)

Course Description Elaboration: Join us and you'll be performing the masterworks for classic guitar ensemble: Bach, Handel, Ravel, Mozart and many others. We'll culminate this course with a public concert in the LCC Theater at the end of the semester. This course is designed for students with classic guitar and note reading experience. If you can't play classic guitar yet, enroll in Mus 121C, Classic Guitar I.

Mus 121D• Classic Guitar I

Introductory classroom instruction in the art of classic guitar playing: solo and ensemble performance, technique, music reading, interpretation, stage etiquette and music literature. May be repeated once for additional credit. Prerequisites: none. (45 lecture/lab hours)

Course Description Elaboration: Tired of the same old chuck 'n jive, hum 'n strum guitar? It's a no-brainer, learn to play classic guitar! Classic guitar is a solo style which combines melody, bass and chords together. We start at the beginning and study basic music reading, technique and tuning. At the end of this course you'll play solos at the level of Greensleeves or Malagueña. Recommended for students planning to enroll in Mus 103, Guitar Ensemble I.

Mus 121E• Pop/Folk Guitar I

Introductory classroom instruction in folk and popular styles of guitar playing: technique, music reading, chord symbols, song accompaniment patterns, stage etiquette and ensemble performance. Prerequisites: none. (45 lecture/lab hours)

Course Description Elaboration: If you want to play simple folk and pop tunes, learn to accompany yourself with guitar, or jam with a garage band, this is the course for you! You'll study music reading, chord symbols, finger picking techniques, bass lines and accompaniment patterns. At the end this course you'll be able to play and arrange music from lead sheets (i.e., play lead and make up your own bass lines and chord accompaniment).

Mus 122D• Classic Guitar II

A continuation of the skills and concepts in Mus 121C, Classic Guitar I: solo and ensemble performance, technique, interpretation, stage etiquette, and music literature for guitar. Prerequisites: Mus 121C or consent of the instructor. (45 lecture/lab hours)

Course Description Elaboration: If you can read notes and play simple classic solos, this is the class for you. You'll study the 5th position (frets 5-8), improve your technique with slurs, scales, harmonics, ornaments and play boatloads of exquisite classical solo and ensemble music.

Mus 122E • Pop/Folk Guitar II

A continuation of Mus 121E, Folk Guitar I. Classroom instruction in folk and popular styles of guitar playing: technique, music reading, chord symbols, song accompaniment patterns, improvisation, stage etiquette and ensemble performance. Prerequisites: Mus 121E or consent of the instructor. (45 lecture/lab hours)

Course Description Elaboration: Congratulations guitar boy 'o girl. You've mastered basic first position note reading and chords but want more (your garage band ain't cuttin' it with just two chords). Welcome to Mus 122E, Folk Guitar II. We'll drive headlong into music reading in the upper positions, bar chords, improvisation, arranging, scales, bass lines, chord embellishment and accompaniment patterns within the context of folk, blues, jazz and rock styles.

A continuation of Mus 122G, Folk Guitar II. Mus 221H • Classic Guitar III

A continuation of Mus 122C, Classic Guitar II. Advanced skills and concepts involving solo and ensemble performance, technique, interpretation, stage etiquette and music literature are addressed. Prerequisites: Mus 122C or consent of the instructor. (45 lecture/lab hours)

Course Description Elaboration: Got those Romanza blues? You've nailed the fifth position, your solos are happening but you're so sick of Carcassi and Sor you could spit chunks. Maybe your fingers are wimpy and you need to pump some serious nylon. What should you do? Slide into guitar nirvana: Classic Guitar III. Real music for real guitarists. Play killer solos, explore the fingerboard's outermost reaches, unveil the performance secrets of the pros, refine your tone, learn guitar maintenance and adjustments, polish your technique and reading and workout in master classes and class concerts. Classic Guitar III will prime you for serious playing, private instruction or music major studies.

Mus 232G • Applied Music: Classical Guitar

Individual instruction for music majors. Prerequisites: consent through audition. (7.5 lecture/lab hours)

Course Description Elaboration: Private instruction in classic guitar playing. Open only to those with intermediate or advanced classical guitar ability and music major status. Concurrent enrollment in a LCC performing ensemble and music theory is required. Selection by audition during the first week of school.
