Images from Diamond Head Scenic Area Diamond Head is among the most famous landmarks in the world. The ocean front is known for world class surfing and windsurfing. Although adjacent to Waikiki, much of the rim and slopes are in a fairly natural state, with sweeping vistas, rugged ravins and flowing grasslands. The crater's interior is a popular tourist attraction and affords a grueling two mile hike through scrub brush, steep inclines and 100 degree temperatures. Unfortunately, the cater interior is not very photogenic, especially the remnants of the military occupation. However, there are photo opportunities in abundance on the rim and slopes. The slopes both above and below the Diamond Head Road and Lighthouse are not for the faint of heart. Do not walk these trails by yourself, especially late in the afternoon, weekends and holidays. Never bring children on the trails. There is beauty in this place but also mental illness and perversion. I have been stalked, attacked and had large stones thrown at me. While dodging stones, I fell and injured my arm so badly it hurt for years (I saved my camera!). During those few weeks I glimpsed the good, bad and the ugly of Diamond Head. I don't enjoy watching my back so I no longer tread these slopes. |
