Peter Kun Frary, Professor of Music • University of Hawaii, Leeward
Peter Kun Frary is a critically acclaimed solo classical guitarist who garners such praise as: "…an insightful and personable artist…cleanly articulate and intensely musical…" in a past Honolulu Advertiser concert review. He has performed concerts for the Ensemble Players Guild, Hawaii Chamber Orchestra, Classical Guitar Society of Hawaii, State Foundation on Culture and the Arts, Hawaii Public Radio and the University of Hawaii.
Since its inception in 1992, Peter and Se Il Frary have performed extensively as the Frary Guitar Duo, developing a reputation for lyricism, musical insight and elegance. Here are a couple tracks of them performing at Orvis Auditorium: Mestiça (Brazilian folk song) and Variations on Greensleeves.

Origins
Peter Kun Frary grew up in Port Townsend, Washington, a mill town of 5000 souls on the Northeastern Olympic Peninsula. Public schools were friends of the arts and offered orchestra, band and choir from elementary through high school. Music was a requirement, not an option. Unlike many students today, he had the privilege of being immersed in music and art from a young age, studying guitar and violin from age 10.
After graduating from WWU, Frary washed ashore on Oahu (oh-ah-who, gathering place of cars). He soon realized that Hawaii's balmy tropical climate suited him better than the dark and dreary weather of the Pacific Northwest and, hence, took up residence in Honolulu. He eked out a living teaching guitar for the University of Hawaii and performing on concert stages and Waikiki dives.
Frary's formal music education includes a Bachelor of Arts in Guitar Performance from Western Washington University and a Master of Arts in Musicology from the University of Hawaii at Manoa. He has published compositions and articles in Guitar and Lute, Soundboard, Gendai Guitar and Makali'i. He is the author of three guitar books, Beginning to Play Classical Guitar, Beginning to Play Folk Guitar and Solos for Classic Guitar.
Frary is currently Professor of Music at the University of Hawaii, Leeward, where he teaches class guitar, guitar ensemble, applied music and music theory.
